Jul 01, 2009
We are pleased to announce that Ford Nassen & Baldwin P.C. is expanding to better serve our clients with the opening of a new office in Houston. The office will open on July 1, 2009. We are also delighted to share with you that Houstonian Curtis Martin has joined the firm as a shareholder and will lead the Houston office. Also, Anthony Whitley, an associate in our Dallas office, will be relocating to Houston to support the new office.
Curt, a 1979 graduate of Harvard Law School, practiced with a nationally known, Atlanta based, construction law boutique prior to moving to Houston in 2000 to serve as the President and Chief Operating Officer of an ENR 400 commercial general contractor. He later established his own construction consulting/construction law practice in Houston.
Curt has extensive experience with commercial, highway, industrial, and other construction markets in Houston and the Gulf Coast region. He has worked with large commercial owners, contractors, and specialty trade contractors on projects of varying size and complexity. He has taught construction law at the undergraduate and graduate level in university programs, and has spoken on construction law and construction management in seminars both nationally and internationally. He is a member of the American Arbitration Association’s national Large Complex Case panel of neutrals and the AGC’s National Risk Management Committee.
We are excited about the opportunities that Curt, Anthony and our Houston office will afford us to better serve the needs of clients with offices and/or operations in Houston and the Gulf Coast region of the state. Legal and Practical Solutions for the Construction Industry
When construction on a hotel/condominium tower ground to a halt because of a contract dispute, millions of private and public investment dollars were at stake. Already partially complete, the project’s future was suddenly in doubt. The city, which owned the land, turned to the construction law firm of Ford Nassen & Baldwin (FNB) for a solution.
“We negotiated a compromise involving the flow of funds, which was the main point of disagreement,” explains George Baldwin, a shareholder at FNB. “We understood technical construction issues the other lawyers could not get their hands around, and applied that knowledge to persuade the parties to work together.”
From design to finance, construction, labor and more, FNB speaks the unique language of developer, architects, builders and engineers. With 17 lawyers, most of whom previously worked in the construction industry, the firm boasts one of the highest concentrations of construction law practitioners in Texas, and can match the experience of its largest competitors. Yet, as a boutique practice based in Dallas and Austin, FNB provides the kind of high-touch, personal attention ordinarily associated with smaller firms.
“Construction law is all we do, so our learning curve is minimal,” says shareholder John Nassen. “This saves our clients both time and money.”
Ford, Nassen, Baldwin and others at FNB have served, or currently serve, on the board of the State Bar of Texas’ Construction Law Section. Additionally, the firm is ranked by Chambers USA as a top-tier construction law firm. And in 2008 and 2004, FNB received the prestigious Star Award from the Quoin Chapter of The Associated General Contractors of America, the largest construction industry trade group in the country.
“Our lawyers really understand the construction business and trends,” says shareholder Jeff Ford, who worked his way through law school by building roads. “We are often able to provide practical business solutions rather than fancy legal solutions so that problems can be solved without going to court.”
For example, FNB represented a foreign contractor building a power plant outside the United States for an American company. Complications arose that could have doomed not only that project, but the future business relationship between the two companies. Instead of going to court, disagreements were settled amicably through arbitration, which set the foundation for future business dealings between the two companies. Two years later, they are still cooperating on major projects in Central and South America.
Whether through litigation or negotiation, FNB seeks the most cost-effective, positive solution for clients in all sectors of the construction industry. The firm has provided legal services in such projects as the Alamo Dome, San Antonio International Airport, State Highway 130, Frost Bank Tower, the Texas Capitol Restoration project, the Bob Bullock Museum in Austin, the Dallas Convention Center and more.
“What we do contributes to where we live, work and play, in the sense that our clients are building facilities in which those activities take place,” Ford says. “We take some pride in the fact that we help our clients’ projects come to fruition and be successful.” |
